This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice. Across three books - What Does It Mean to Be Human , What Is Lost in Translation , and What We Could Build - Ravinder Nath Bhalla, MD, sets out one sustained argument on being human in the age of robots and augmented intelligence. The first book names what was left out.
Augmented intelligence was built from the measurable surface of human capacity - language, pattern, problem-solving - while the deeper inheritance was passed over: the four-billion-year body, the small reason and the great reason, the digestion of experience into character.
The book lays out that inheritance, the cycles of scarcity that consume it, and the wager placed on a technology built from only the top layer.
The second book descends into the rooms where the loss is being lived now - the clinical encounter, the marriage where the chatbot is the third party, the classroom under the flattening, the institution that has lost the faces it was made for - testing what is preserved when augmented intelligence enters as helper, and what is consumed when it enters as substitute.
The third book turns to construction, setting out a single structural law for every deployment at every scale: a system either preserves what it depends on or it consumes it.
The law is tested against the defining cases - algorithmic denial of medical care, the autonomous vehicle, clinical tools that honored their disciplines and ones that refused them, autonomous weapons under UN negotiation - and then against the author's own working clinical prototype, built to teach and permitted to remain unfinished.
The trilogy closes with Victor Hugo's question, asked since 1874, now put to those deciding what this technology becomes: what will you do for the children? Written in collaboration with Claude (Anthropic) and read throughout by Google's Gemini, the work is itself the relationship it argues for - human judgment, machine as augmenter, neither alone sufficient.
