Entertaining, informative, interactive-magnificently illustrated. That's not how you've encountered Wagner before. This edition brings to book form Stefan Mickisch's groundbreaking work on redefining all leitmotifs in Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen for the first time in a systematic way.
Mickisch was an internationally acclaimed pianist, musicologist and performer. Stefan Mickisch's opera introductions at the piano are legendary. "No opera commentator can hold a candle to Stefan Mickisch-dead or alive," the Vienna State Opera reportedly said of him.
Mickisch was a controversial figure and, at the same time, a true star of the Bayreuth Festival - performing and lecturing all over the world. In Bayreuth alone, he explained at the grand piano more than 500 times - always in front of sold-out houses - what holds Wagner's operas together at their core.
Mickisch was able to present the musical DNA of the largest opera work in history vividly and engagingly - for example for Austrian Radio ORF. Opera dramaturg Stephan Knies has edited and expanded Mickisch's explanations. New in this edition is the systematic compilation of the related leitmotifs in clearly structured groups.
Each leitmotif is enriched with a full-color illustration by the renowned illustrator Oliver Bieber. QR codes in the book lead to original audio clips by Stefan Mickisch.
