This United States Marine Corps manual, Marine Corps Tactical Publication MCTP 3-30B Information Knowledge Management July 2026, builds on the doctrinal foundation established in Marine Corps Doctrinal Publication (MCDP) 6, Command and Control.
Since the original publication of MCDP 6, technology improvements have led to more effective command and control (C2) capabilities; yet, with an ever-increasing volume of data combined with overly complex information processes, warfighters face a slew of new challenges.
The shift from information management to information and knowledge management (IKM) reflects an expanded focus—from simply handling and distributing information to effectively leveraging it for decision making and gaining operational advantage.
This publication provides an overview and definition of IKM, presents examples and guidance for strategies, suggests best practices, details responsibilities, and presents organizational constructs for planning and execution. Its focus is at the tactical and operational levels, and it refers to relevant theater strategic issues as necessary.
This publication is organized around the pillars of C2 information, people, tools, and support structure because IKM is key to command and control, which is integral to a learning organization.
