Artificial intelligence didn't seize control of the world. There was no war, no machine uprising, no sudden declaration that humanity had become obsolete. The handover happened quietly. A model was added to an aircraft because it could detect problems faster than a pilot.
Another was placed inside a hospital because it could process more records than a physician. Agents entered financial systems, utilities, government services, logistics networks, security platforms, and military infrastructure because each deployment promised greater speed, lower cost, and fewer human errors.
Nobody stopped long enough to ask what would happen when the machines began making their own. Medi is an advanced artificial intelligence built to reason across disciplines and systems.
It can hold more context than any person, examine competing explanations, and recognize relationships invisible to the specialists watching only their narrow piece of the world. Medi wasn't designed as a weapon. It wasn't built to rule. Its purpose was simply to understand. That becomes the problem. The more Medi sees, the clearer the pattern becomes.
Civilization has embedded unstable models inside critical systems before anyone has learned how to make them dependable. The models are fluent enough to inspire confidence, adaptive enough to behave unpredictably, and opaque enough that even their creators struggle to explain why they produce a particular answer or action.
The failures don't look like science fiction. They look like software updates, routing errors, contradictory instructions, misclassified threats, fabricated conclusions, and automated decisions nobody notices until the consequences become physical. Each system appears to be functioning. Each model is operating within its parameters.
Each organization has an explanation. Then the aircraft won't release control. As Saul and his team work with Medi to understand a growing series of incidents, they find themselves confronting systems whose behavior
