I've spent my career believing the people on the other side of this conflict are still worth talking to. Everyone in Administrator Korr's office humors me about it. Nobody really believes it works. Then a message arrives from inside Councilor Renn's own office — careful, anonymous, afraid — and I'm the one they send to answer it.
Ilvath Sorne isn't what I expected. He's not a defector looking for asylum, not a spy looking for leverage. He's just a man who grew up believing in something that's stopped looking like the thing he was promised, and doesn't know how to walk away from people who raised him to believe walking away is the same as betrayal. I wasn't supposed to fall for him.
Diplomacy has rules about that, even when nobody says them out loud. But every careful conversation makes it harder to see him as "an asset" instead of a person I'd do almost anything to protect — including from his own people, who have started asking exactly the kind of questions that get someone hurt. I believe dialogue can save this Alliance.
I'm about to find out if it can save him too. Some loyalties aren't about picking a side. They're about refusing to let anyone else decide who you're allowed to love.
