Description
Your inbox is still full at 4 p.m., and the coffee went cold an hour ago. At the corner of your desk, a medium snake plant stands tall and unbothered, its stiff leaves striped in dark and pale green. It hasn't asked for a thing all week, which is more than you can say for your inbox.
Sansevieria trifasciata copes with dim light and dry soil better than most houseplants, and its upright leaves take up very little room. Among desk plants and low light office plants, few are easier to live with.
Care
Will a snake plant survive in an office with no windows?
Snake plants cope with low light better than most desk plants, though even they need some daylight. In a windowless office, keep yours there for two weeks at a time, then give it a longer stretch by a bright window.
Where should you put a snake plant on a desk?
Snake plants grow best on the brightest corner of your desk, close to a window if you can. They tolerate dim light well, but two to six hours of direct sun a day suits them even better.
How often should you water a snake plant in an office?
Office snake plants need watering only once the soil has dried out, from spring through fall. In winter, once every month or two is plenty. In a dim room they drink even less, so check the soil first.
For stronger growth, feed your snake plant once a month in spring and summer with an all-purpose houseplant fertilizer at half strength.
How do I keep my snake plant small?
Snake plants are happy in a snug pot, which helps keep a small snake plant compact. Every few years, you can divide the clump and repot the pieces. Each division can start a new plant for another desk.
Are there snake plants that stay small?
Some snake plants stay small for good. The dwarf form called 'Hahnii' grows as a short, funnel-shaped rosette. It suits even the smallest desks, but ours is the upright form, with taller leaves that grow straight up.
How big is a medium snake plant?
Our medium snake plant stands 2-3 ft tall when it arrives. Each one grows a little differently, so the exact height depends on the plant we pick for you. Its leaves stand close together, so it uses very little desk space.
Pet-friendly?
Is a snake plant safe to keep around cats and dogs?
Snake plants aren't safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA lists them as toxic to both, because of compounds called saponins, and we class ours as not pet-friendly. Keep yours on a desk or shelf your pets can't reach.
Factoids
What is the perfect plant for an office desk?
The best desk plants cope with modest light and the odd weekend without water. Snake plants do both, and NC State Extension calls them difficult to kill. That puts them among the best office plants for low light.
Where does Sansevieria trifasciata come from?
Sansevieria trifasciata grows wild in West and West Central Africa. Botanists have now moved it into the Dracaena genus, so you may see it labeled Dracaena trifasciata. Garden centers and plant shops still sell it under its old name.
