The Computer Model The authors developed a digital computer model (written in Python) that simulates 19 interconnected compartments of the human circulatory system, including the four heart chambers, four valves, the main blood vessels, and nine organ perfusion beds.
It uses mathematical formulas to analyze how specific heart conditions affect blood pressure, volume, and flow.
Acute Mitral Regurgitation (Sudden Valve Failure) When the mitral valve suddenly leaks without prior warning (e.g., from a ruptured cord or muscle), the body has no time to adapt: Left Side of the Heart & Body: A large volume of blood leaks backward into the left atrium during contractions.
This severely drops forward stroke volume, cardiac output, and overall blood pressure, leading to low tissue perfusion. Lungs & Right Side of the Heart: The sudden backward pressure flood hits the lungs, causing an immediate, drastic rise in pulmonary venous pressure that reaches thresholds for severe pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs).
This increases the workload on the right ventricle, causing mild pulmonary hypertension.
